Organization

The Department of Diagnostic Radiology at Creighton University Medical Center consists of a core department including general diagnostic radiology, CT, MRI, angio/interventional, neuroradiology, ultrasound, and nuclear medicine.

Affiliated Hospitals

Through an affiliation agreement, pediatric radiology is provided by The Children's Hospital of Omaha.

Faculty

The core department located at St. Joseph Hospital, has eleven full-time faculty covering each of the sub-specialty areas within diagnostic radiology. In addition, a research coordinator and a physicist support the needs of the department.

Case Volume

The Creighton University Medical Center facility does an annual exam load of approximately 82,000. This is well divided between inpatient and outpatient examinations and evenly spread throughout the sub-specialties areas within diagnostic radiology. The affiliated hospital provides access to another 40,000 examinations. With a full complement of twelve residents, this makes for adequate teaching material per resident.

Preliminary Year

All entering residents are required to have a PGY-1 transitional year. This may be in the form of a medicine, surgical, or rotating clinical internship. Three PGY-2 level residents are taken into the diagnostic radiology program each year.

Imaging Technology

The department offers all radiologic services using state-of-the-art equipment. The hospital has a high-performance MRI system with echo planar imaging, a sophisticated angio\interventional suite that meets sterility requirements for operating room procedures if needed, MD CT, and state-of-the-art R & F units.

Benefits

The university provides residents with parking, four weeks of paid vacation, laboratory coats, health and medical liability insurance and leave time for educational experience. Salary levels above the Midwest mean. In addition, a six week elective at the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology is provided by the department.

History of Success

The quality of graduates of the Creighton University Diagnostic Radiology program is attested to by our very high pass rates on the American Board of Radiology certification examinations. Our residents consistently place in outstanding fellowships, highly competitive academic and private practice positions.

Training Environment

Creighton University's other residency programs include general surgery, internal medicine, orthopedics, psychiatry, family practice, pediatrics, and obstetrics and gynecology. Beyond excellence in all areas of clinical medicine, the Radiology Department is provided with unique clinical material in orthopedic tumors, hereditary cancer syndromes, swallowing disorders, laparoscopic surgery, and cardiology/cardiothoracic surgery.
