DIAGNOSTIC RADIOLOGY ELECTIVE (436)
COURSE GOALS:
This elective will provide a comprehensive overview of medical radiology, including the principles of radiology, basic principles of image interpretation, and the range, uses, limitations and costs of diagnostic techniques.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the elective, the fourth year medical student will be able to:
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of:
- The chest, including the heart
- The head and spine, with emphasis on trauma
- The abdomen, with emphasis on CT anatomy
- State the fundamental principles of the physics of:
- Radiology
- CT
- Ultrasound
- MRI
- Describe the fundamentals of trauma radiology
- Describe and summarize for patients the basic principles of radiation, its effects, and radiation protection.
- List factors that contribute to an effective consultative relationship between clinicians and radiologists.
- Discuss the value, indications, limitations, sequencing and costs of diagnostic techniques.
CORE CURRICULUM
Monday through Thursday
8am-11am Film interpretation with staff and residents
11am-12pm Student lecture/Didactic teaching
12pm-1pm Noon conference with residents
Friday
Independent study, research, preparation of Power Point presentations.
REQUIRED LEARNING ACTIVITES:
- Core curriculum sessions (e.g. conferences, didactic sessions, film interpretation sessions)
- Assigned readings, including the outline of the expectations and appropriate discussion of physics of radiology
- Power Point presentation - each presentation should be approximately 10 minutes and will be presented on the last Thursday of the rotation. If the student should need to be absent on that day, prior arrangements will need to be made to make up the examination.
- Comprehensive exam - the written examination will occur on the last Thursday of the rotation and will test on important points of the rotation. Again, if the student should need to be absent on that day, prior arrangements will need to be made to make up the examination.
- Individual project - for students interested in pursuing a career in radiology. Each student will complete a project on a variety of subjects with the objective of presentation/publication in the medical literature. Topic will be suggested by course faculty.
STUDENT EVALUATIONS:
- Students scoring at least 80% on the exam with a satisfactory Power Point presentation, attendance and participation will receive a passing grade
- Students scoring over 90% on the exam with an exceptional Power Point presentation and outstanding attendance and participation will earn honors.
- Students will be informally evaluated by the residents and staff. This information will be used to evaluate student attendance and participation.
- Students will also be asked to evaluate the elective and nominate resident and staff members for recognition of their educational efforts.
